The History of Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, a United States Marine Corps Reservist, launched the program in Los Angeles. Inspired by his wife, who wanted to donate a handmade doll but couldn’t find a charitable organization to accept it, Hendricks rallied fellow Marines to collect and distribute toys to children in need. The program was so successful that it became a nationwide campaign in 1948, with the U.S. Marine Corps officially adopting Toys for Tots as a community action program.
Since its inception, Toys for Tots has delivered over 627 million toys to more than 281 million children, spreading joy and hope to families across the country. This monumental effort is made possible through partnerships with organizations like ours, local businesses, and generous community members.
The Impact of Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots does more than provide toys—it fosters hope and uplifts communities. The program helps alleviate the financial burden on families during the holidays, ensuring that children who might otherwise go without a gift feel the joy and warmth of the season. According to the Toys for Tots Foundation:
97% of donations go directly toward providing toys, books, and other gifts to children.
In 2022 alone, over 19 million toys were distributed to more than 7.3 million children nationwide.
The program collaborates with 800+ local charities to maximize its reach and effectiveness.
